The Problem With Resolutions
When it comes to setting goals for ourselves it seems that the odds are stacked high against us right from the get go…
The reason, oddly enough, has to do with our own brain.
You see, there’s a little term psychologists like to throw around called “cognitive dissonance,” which is really just a fancy way of saying your goals aren’t exactly in alignment with how you view yourself.
Psychology professor, Peter Herman, refers to this as the “false hope syndrome,” which means that your resolution is out of alignment with your internal view of yourself.
The first 2 weeks go great, but then as they move into the following weeks little setbacks turn into huge hurdles which seem insurmountable.
Those obstacles turn out to be to great to overcome because your goal wasn’t either something you truly wanted and envisioned for yourself, or you didn’t have a stronger enough “why.”
Having worked with clients on a 1-on-1 basis for over 15 years I think there’s also another reason why many of us almost seem “hard-wired” to fail and that’s because we simply lack a true system for success.
The reason for this, of course, is that there are thousands of media-hyped “recipes for success” promising you the world. On one aisle there’s a book selling you how to lose 300 lbs. in 30 days and on the next shelf there’s a package promoting the “magic fat loss pill in a bottle!”
Funny how those programs and products never last more than a year…
But of course, the marketers of those programs make enough money right out of the gates by deceiving enough people and they get rich – and then coincidently disappear.
How convenient for them.
What you need is a real system to achieve your goals and today I want to share with you 5 tips my online and studio clients use to transform their bodies and minds:
1. Set Only Realistic Goals
Many people fail because they set too many goals, which does no allow them to stay FOCUSED on what they need to do to become successful.
2. Make Your Goal Public, But…
Only share your goal with people who will be supportive. Start a weight loss group, or grab a buddy and set a workout schedule together.
3. Find Your Reason Why
It is imperative that you have a BIG reason why you want to achieve your goal. This reason why will allow you to push through challenges when they arise – and they will…
4. Track Your Progress
Track your goals on weekly basis, which will allow you to take your daily averages and allow you to see if you’re moving in the right direction. Those who track their progress achieve their goals much faster and with more precision.
5. Find a Coach
Using a coach or proven system that is SAFE and effective is the easiest way to attain your goals. Why? Because it takes the guesswork out of it for you, and you can just “copy” a step-by-step playbook others have used to reach the same goals you have.
Whether your goal is to lose weight, build muscle, reduce debt, be happier, or own your own business I highly recommend you follow the tips above and if possible hire a coach.
If your goal is health & fitness oriented you could just join a gym, but the odds of you achieving your health or body transformation goals by just signing up for a membership are slim to none…
I know this because I worked in a gym for many years and saw thousands of people come and go (mostly go) without ever making any noticeable change.
The reason was that they thought that by just joining a gym that it would somehow motivate them to lose the weight and tone up their body…
However, I did see a small percentage of people not only achieve their goals, but actually surprise even themselves.
What these people had that the others didn’t was a way to keep themselves accountable and “take their brain out of the game.”
What I mean by that is that if you have a step-by-step program to follow you don’t have to figure everything out on your own and instead you can follow a proven formula.
I realized this many years ago by being mentored myself in martial arts and I applied this same systematic formula to my body transformation work.
